L. EVELYN CUBA was born March 23, 1929 in rural Kaseyville, Missouri to Ida Belle (Coleman) Hicken and Lucas Christian Hicken. She grew up in Missouri, living many of those years in Higbee, Missouri. On June 11, 1949 she married John M. Cuba of Tennessee, Illinois. The couple was married in the home of her parents, enabling them and others of her family to share the joy of that day. Following a honeymoon to Pikes Peak, the couple began their lives together in rural Tennessee, Illinois where they spent their entire married life.

Evelyn is survived by the couple’s four children: Letha (Gary) Clark, Industry, Illinois; Luan (Tom) Underwood, Navarre, Florida; Lyndall (Janice) Cuba, Downs, Illinois; Audrey (Bill) Prynn, Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren: Tonya (Jeff) Woods, Krista (Kevin) Groenewold, Leslie (Myron) Kessler, Beth (Brady) Stewart, Jessica Cuba, Lindsey Cuba, Landon Cuba, Will Prynn, and Carley Prynn, along with nine great-grandchildren: Logan Woods, Cooper Woods, Cassidy Woods, Nolan Groenewold, Madeline Groenewold, Abigail Kessler, Olivia Kessler, Annabelle Kessler, and Ruby Stewart.

She is also survived by two sisters, Ione DeJoia and Erma Brown, one brother-in-law, Bragg Brown, and one sister-in-law, Billie Hicken, as well as many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Listle C. Hicken, Roy W. Hicken, Orlin J. Hicken and Harold W. Hicken; three sisters, Rosanna Hicken, Dena Hicken, and Trellas Helmich, two brothers-in-law, Otto Helmich and Carmen DeJoia; and three sisters-in-law, Ruby Hicken, Mildred Hicken, and Lillian Hicken; and four nephews and two nieces.

In her teens, Evelyn worked in Higbee’s Old Fashioned Department Store and Randolph County’s Bookmobile. During her married life, Evelyn was active in Hills Grove United Methodist Women, Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, and McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary. She collected data for the Illinois State Crop Reporting Service, worked at the Colchester State Bank, and was staff secretary for Western Illinois University Dean of College of Business, retiring in 1991 after 20 years of service. While working at WIU, Evelyn took advantage of several class offerings. After retiring from WIU, she enjoyed many volunteer activities as well as part-time work at Kathy’s Florist and Greenhouse. All her married life, Evelyn was a devoted and active member of the Hills Grove United Methodist Church. As a tribute to her years of active and tireless service, she was honored as 2006 UMW Woman of the Year.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 22, 2015,  at 10:00 A.M. at the Hillsgrove United Methodist Church,  Rev. Dan Schenck, will officiate.  Burial will take place at Hills Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, June 21, 2015, at Jones Mortuary in Colchester.  Friends may view and sign the register book at the funeral home after 8:00 A.M.
