Bernard J Lewis, 89, of Colchester, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.
Bernard was born October 21, 1925 in Emmet Township, son of Philip and Anna (Doran) Lewis.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret (Hinman) Lewis, two sisters, Doris Edwards, Macomb, IL and Joann Moore, Blandinville, IL, five children, Susan McSperritt, Macomb, IL, Steven (Cynthia) Lewis, Warrenville, IL, June (Tom) Reams, Gilson, IL, Rose (Jay) Garrison, Knoxville, IL, and George (Kim) Lewis, Bloomington, IL, nine grandchildren, Dennis (Jennifer) Reams, Karen Reams, James Lewis, Andrew (Katy) Garrison, Mark McSperritt (Jennifer), Amanda (Chris) Lempke, Anna Lewis, Emily (Matt) Gerig, Brett Lewis, six great grandchildren, Karissa Kitch, Janna Reams, Natalie Reams, Madison Garrison, Catelynn Garrison, Charlotte Gerig, and one great great grandson Aden Kitch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sons, Douglas Mark Lewis and Stanley Wayne Lewis, two brothers, Edward Lewis and John Lewis and two sisters, Helen Lewis, and Mary Williams.
Bernard graduated from Macomb High School, Macomb, IL where he played basketball and football. He enlisted in the United States Army, was assigned to the Army Air Corps, and served in Italy during World War II. He and family members operated the Lewis Rock Quarry. Later he worked for the Martin Ready Mix, before joining Western Illinois University as a stationary engineer at the physical plant.
He was former alderman and mayor of the City of Colchester, coached Colchester Little League teams and the Colchester Cyclones, a girls fast pitch softball team and was a Boy Scout leader.
He was a life-long member of St Paul’s Catholic Church, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Gold Hills Golf Club, and a former member of the Emmet Rangers.
Interests included the Cubs, golf, card games, maintenance of three cemeteries, socializing with family and friends, and repairing golf carts and lawn mowers.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 25, 2015, at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Macomb, with Monsignor Richard Pricco. Burial will follow the services at St. Paul Cemetery in Macomb. Visitation with the family will be 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at the Jones Mortuary in Colchester. Friends may view and sign the register book at the funeral home after 9:00 A.M. Wednesday. The family suggests memorials to the Colchester Rescue Squad or Mississippi Valley Blood Bank.
