Sandra (Sandy) Porter - 77

9/7/1940 - 1/8/2018

Owasso, Oklahoma, formerly of Colchester

Sandra (Sandy) Elaine Porter, passed away peacefully on the 8th of January surrounded by loved ones and treasured friends. She was born September 8th, 1940 in Colchester, Illinois to Ruth and Theodore Porter.
Sandy’s (Oggie’s) heart was full of many things. Love for her family, her friends, and sports. She grew up a tomboy, playing at the ‘Balas’ a local pond where she and her friends would sled, skate, and swim. She loved Baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals, a passion passed down from her father. She was a great basketball player who was well known for her never miss turn around jump shot.
Like all great athletes, Sandy put in work. She began her working career at Maid-Rite at fifteen, and continued working around the Colchester area over the next fifty years before retiring from Methode Electronic in Carthage. Along the way Sandy showed her entrepreneurial spirit by taking a Dale Carnegie Leadership course class #5 in 1974. She was voted most improved of her class, and put those leadership skills to work, when she opened her own Carpet and Cabinetry business in Colchester.
California, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin. Very different places, but just one Sandy. Visiting family, friends, or seeing the Iowa Hawkeyes play in the Rose Bowl, she brought her smile from coast to coast. From trying her first taco while sitting on the beach in the 50’s, to visiting Disneyland just after it opened, Sandy made the West Coast her favorite coast, despite only visiting occasionally.
Regardless of where she lived, worked, or played, Sandy loved Elvis. Few people remember what they were into in high school, let alone bring it into their adult lives, but not Sandy. From posters on her walls her Senior year, to jamming out “The King” as a senior citizen, Sandy has, and will always be Elvis’s biggest fan. Music was a key part of her life, as music is key to memory, and a good song can always take you back. Elvis brought her joy, whereas gospel hymns brought her comfort.
Sandy was many things. A mother, a grandmother, and athlete, a business owner, an explorer, a super fan and a great friend. All these parts came together to make the person we all love, cherish, and will miss deeply.
