Mel was truly an incredible woman. I met her in the cafeteria as a cafeteria lady when I first started attending Western Illinois University in 2011. She reached out to me and engage in conversation with me every time I saw her. One of the most incredible things about Mel was seeing how happy she was. Us students brought her joy, especially those of us that allowed her to engage and connect with us. I loved going to see Mel during lunch or dinner. I would only go in her line. she used to always smile at me and tell me i had the most beautiful smile. She'd say smile for me when she knew i was tired or upset. But i'd smile for her because i knew it made her day. she'd say you have such a beautiful smile babygirl i love seeing you come through my line everyday. She cared so much for us i knew that. I'm going to miss you Mel very much. I'm upset I haven't seen you in awhile, but I know a little part of you is with me now. R.I.P. Mel

Calvin, I have no words. I just talked to her a week and a half ago. I am so happy you came into her life, she loved you to the moon and back. Thank you for loving her the way she so deserved, with all of your heart. We could not talk for months and for some reason if one of us needed the other the good Lord would make sure the other new it. We just made plans to ride horses, I guess now she will be with me on every ride. Loved her like a sister. If you need anything give me a call. So very sorry

I first met Melanie in the 1980's and had reconnected with her at WIU in 2012. She was such a kind and loving woman. Her cheerfulness was infectious.
