Rural Tennessee, Illinois
Martha Darleen (Logan) Gray, 88, or rural Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018. She was born on October 18, 1929 to David and Gladys (Bloom) Logan in Tennessee, Illinois. She was one of eight children.
One of the things that Martha will be remembered for most was her love of talking. She could talk to anyone, at any time, about anything. Everyone she met was a friend and she was always telling people, no matter the circumstance, how beautiful they looked, how pretty their hair was, or how good they smelled. She saw the best in everyone and everything. Besides talking, Martha enjoyed taking walks, spending time with friends and family, taking trips, riding the train, telling stories, rock collecting, and taking pictures of sunsets, flowers, and scenery. No one left her house without being offered food or money.
In 1947 she graduated from Colchester High School and in 1949 she met the love of her life, Britten Gray Jr.. The two were united in marriage on June 8, 1956 in Colchester. In August of 1958 Martha began working at the Post Office in Tennessee, IL and in May of 1976 she began working at the Post Office in Colchester, IL. She worked in Colchester for several years before becoming the Postmistress in Plymouth, IL where she worked until she retired in 1993.
On July 8, 1957, Martha began the hardest job of her life; being a mother to three very rambunctious, ornery, and stubborn boys: Freeman, Richard and Robert.
Surviving to mourn her passing are her brother Donnie Logan and wife Betty of Blandinsville; three sons: Freeman A. Gray of rural Tennessee, Richard E. Gray and wife Kathryn (Nell) Gray of rural Plymouth, and Robert A. Gray and Susan Vanwinkle of Colchester; five grandchildren: McKinzie (Gray) Parlier and husband Daniel Parlier of Roseville, Zoey Gray of rural Plymouth, Cori (Dill) Billingsley and husband Cameron of Lewiston, and Dalton and Dyllon Deeter of Colchester; five great grandchildren: Iris and Eleanore Parlier of Roseville, Simon Peterson and Seth Parlier of rural Rio, and Salem Billingsley of Lewiston; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters: Mildred, Irene, Viola, and Shirley, and two brothers: Wayne and Bob.
